Finding Work During Covid 19

Do Your Research

There are businesses who are currently hiring.  A quick search of LinkedIn identified several businesses who are currently looking for help.

Additionally, there are categories that are struggling including: healthcare, retail sales, trucking, call centers and more.

Network

While this might sound funny, given we are in the middle of a global pandemic, it can still be done.  Use your social media platforms to network with your current group of friends and colleagues.  Let them know you are looking for a position. Share with them your skill sets.  Ask for invitations and connections.  A good referral from a friend or previous co-worker/manager can go a long way in helping you get your foot in the door.

Review and Update your Resume

Again, this may seem silly.  You’re looking for a job.  Of course you’ve updated your resume.  The key difference here…we’re in a pandemic.  Let the potential companies know you are savvy with technology.  Have you used video chat and conferencing services? (If you need a quick tutorial, there are several on YouTube.)  If you have skills working collaboratively using Google Docs or similar platforms, this should be added to your resume.  And, don’t forget the soft skills.  Companies are looking for people who can work independently and manage their time well.

Develop a Plan and Work Your Plan

I hear my Dad when I write the above sentence.  He was spectacular at developing and executing plans.  So, from my Dad….”break it off into smaller chunks”.  How many people will you reach out to daily, weekly, monthly?  How will you track your progress?  How will you reward yourself when you hit your goals?  It’s important to celebrate the small incremental steps.  They help you on your journey.  So, make five calls – and then go for a walk to celebrate.

Good luck out there!  What steps are you taking on your job search?
